Matteo Correggia Roero Arreis – from the wine virgin

This was definitely the most interesting white wine of the night – not my favorite, but the  most interesting in taste. Matteo Correggia Roero Arreis is a white from Italy. One thing I learned at a previous tasting was that Italian wines, unless sparkling wines, are in need of food. This could have been the case for this wine. It tasted kind of bizarre, but fun to try.

The smell was very earthy and even muskier than the Hatzidakis. However, this musky taste wasn’t really met with a citrus taste. It was odd – the taste had an undertone of a blackberry or dark fruit, but the overtone was of vegetables. When discussing the taste of this wine, Chris said that cucumber could be apparent in this wine. Once this was disclosed, I realized that he was right – the vegetable taste was of a cucumber.

This was what was so bizarre about this wine. Most wines, particularly whites, I have associated with a fruity or citrus taste. Obviously, a novice wine drinker would think this since it is from a grape! But tasting vegetables instead of fruits was quite interesting. Since this was an Italian wine, maybe a food pairing would have made it fair better? Still interesting and fun to taste nevertheless.
