The Montinore Estate Gewurztraminer was a fun wine to taste, but was also a conflicting wine. It smelled like sweet honey with a little bit of musk. I have smelled wines before (La Chini) that had an explosion of honey as the taste and smell. This scent was a little muted, and it also seemed like it was reserving something for taste. This definitely was the case and I unfortunately didn’t like the surprise too much.
I am not a fan of sweets and orange together (as I mentioned in previous blogs). While the smell was enticing, the taste created quite an argument in my mouth. The honey was matched with an orange zest. It wasn’t necessarily an overpowering sensation, but it just didn’t agree to me. It was almost as if I wanted to taste what I smelled but was unable to. The wine was interesting in that it stripped all of the pepper away from the crab that we had with the cream cheese and avocado pastries.
Regardless, it was still an interesting wine to try, as were all the wines and dishes from the Valentine’s Day event. This past Friday was a Syrah/Shiraz/Petite Syrah tasting! As I mentioned before, this is my favorite wine as of now, so I’m really excited to let you all know what I had the opportunity to try. And I hope you can join us for an event soon!
When tasting the wine, the conflicting scents were no longer there and the taste was tolerable.
