Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel – from the wine virgin

Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel was a Zinfandel made in a way that I had never heard, or thought about. The barrel that the wine is fermented in is warmed so that it gives off a toasted oak scent. The smell, like the Sonoma, was also warm, and a little buttery. Fruit was also in the mixture, but it wasn’t like a deep fruit like previous wines. It was almost like a ‘candied’ jam or blackberry scent.

The smell of this wine was superb as far as the fruitiness. However, when tasting Klinker Brick, an explosion of fruit and spices danced on the palate. Spice wasn’t really a factor in the scent, so it was quite fun to be surprised by the taste of this wine. The smokiness and oaky flavor was still very evident, and made for quite an interesting combination. I really liked learning about how the barrel was warmed and thought that it made this wine very unique. And it also makes me wonder what other types of wines are fermented in a warm barrel.
