Wine: Shypoke Charbono

Shypoke Charbono

Shypoke Charbono

Charbono is a wonderful grape that fits into the little known and rare categories. Originating in the French Savoie region there are reports of 65 or less acres of this grape being grown throughout the world. Since about 19040 the Shypoke Vineyards are growing these 65 Acres sustainably in the Napa Valley.

The problem with this limited production is there are only about 600 bottles of the wine available most years, it’s not that easy to get your hands on. The good news being that the Shypoke folks are not about inflating the price because of the rarity if the grape and the product!! At $33-35 per a bottle, it is a wonderful value that not many people have the luxury of experiencing!

Speaking of the experience of tasting this grape….

The color is a vibrant, ruby hued wine.

The nose has aromas of black cherry, pomegranate, and dark plum.

The fore of the tongue consists of deep, rich flavors of black fruit and cherry commingling into the mid-palate with subtle sage and tar notes. The long finish is punctuated with ripe and round tannins which compliments the plump fruit flavors leaving a sense of a spicy sensation.
