There are some wines that sell because of the package. Other wines sell based on reputation. A few for the sheer basic snob-appeal. However, there are a few wines that consistently sell vintage in and vintage out based more on a simple ratio, the quality of what you’re buying far exceeds what you’re paying for the wine.

Such is the case every year for Worthy- Sophia’s Cuvee by Axios. This is one wine that I love to see them bring by every year to taste the new vintage because it is going to be big, juicy and dynamic- every year. Sure, as with any vintage there may be subtle nuances that are there more in one vintage than the other, but this is a solid, consistently great wine. In my shop,, the current vintage on the shelf is 2006, and I’ve tried blind verticals with 2004/2005/2006/2007 and I was hard pressed to pick ou the years or tell enough difference to worry about the year. I decided to jusat kick back and enjoy the tasting ride!

Here’s my tasting notes that I think you’ll find work for this fantastic wine every year so far: The wine pours deep purple. When swirled the wine clings to the sides of the glass. Aromas of Black Fruit, Blueberry, Cassis, and Earth expand as you continue to swirl. The wine has a lush mouth feel. Black and Blue fruit, Cherry, Currant and a bit of Cassis are nicely balanced. This is a great bottle to have with a big steak. There is an abundance of oak and firm tannins which mellow a bit after the wine opens. It is best to decant or open it an hour or so before serving.

This wine is beautifully balanced. Although the fruit is prominent in this wine, it does not overwhelm. Those looking for a “fruit bomb” will be disappointed. This is a serious wine that should evolve in the bottle for at least two years and lay down for six or more. That is rare for an American wine in this price range. Which most likely explains why it is one of the most popular wines that I find retailing typically in the mid-$30’s.

So, be certain you try this phenomenal value before they decide it’s better than the current pricing structure!
